Color! or...
Black and White!?
I've been planning a quarterly sketch mag titled "All City" for some time now. For an idea of what might be in it, just do a blog search for "sketches" or "Sketchbook"
Problem is that I've been stuck on the format. My initial idea was to do a black and white quarterly, but could in theory do it in color...which I would really love. BUT it would be much more expensive to print.
So, my question to you is this: Would you rather have a 45-48 page b&w art/sketchbook for around $10 or a color version for around $20?

I would prefer a black and white one, seeing art like that just does something for me:)
I love seeing the B&W art. I would vote for the Color version though if you could mix in some B&W sketches.
I'd love a book that had equal amounts of each, like Skottie Young's "Junk" that has a few b/w pages, then some color, then more b/w.
I realize that means it's priced as a full color book & that's okay with me but there's definitely a chance that'd lose a few sales.
Yeah, if I include ANY color content then you have to pay to print the entire book in color.
But I can include the line art, or pencil art, in a book. It wouldn't all be final colored art. I do often pencil in color, so you'd get to see that as it was done if I did a color book.
So, it's two votes for color (basically) and one for black and white? (with another vote for color on Twitter)

I'd go for the black and white. Then once a year do a color special!
B&W, especially for that kind of price point.

A bit of what everyone said, I can speak up for all those points:
I selfishly would love to see a BxW book, (no glossy paper maybe? But I think that turns people off because they think un-glossy papers are cheap) 'cause your work looks really boss in BxW.
A mix of color and BxW would also be great. On the other hand, that "make one out of four a color special" kind of thing sounds attractive as well.

I like Craig's idea...B&W with a color special once in a while.
I would vote for b&w. After all, most sketches are monochromatic, n'est pas?
I'm going with color for sure. And this is coming from someone who lushes over B/W images. But the color ones would be great. And you can still have some B/W images in the book, but the coloring would be worth the extra $$$.

Seems MOST want b&w, or some variation of it, with MAYBE a color special to wrap it all up.
I do want to point out how often I sketch in color. Those can all easily be converted to B&W, but you'd still loose the original look.

I considered the idea of an end of year color special. But here's the rub. It would be large, over a 100 pages. Maybe as much as 200 pages. Which means it would be expensive to print, and the price would have to be way more then 20 bucks. Someone mentioned Skottie's book, and last time we spoke he was telling me he had to price it super high because the printing costs were so high.
SO, would it really be worth it to have a big color book that could in theory cost as much as 75 to 100 bucks or MORE?
I really do want to get as much of all your input as I can. It's invaluable, and will really dictate what I end up doing here in the near future.

Black and white. Color can take away from art sometimes.

Ah! Always those choices again :) I know much work goes into making these books and hope there will a good solution for them.
I think it would be cool if the color special would be bigger, but if the price is high, then it really depends on the design of the book for me. The B/W books work by themselves I think, because to me it's two pairs of shoes: I'll pick up a B/W sketchbook anytime, but color needs to be wrapped well (I'm a picky fool like that...).
With the higher price a design that incorporates the colors of the sketches in it's look and navigation/sections would be great.
But, I really can't say what Comics fans would buy and what they are affected by in that direction when it comes to picking up the book - except for the great drawings of course.
Anyhow, I'll stop the BLABLA now.

I truly appreciate ALL the input from everyone! Seems a black and white ar mag with a possible color special is edging out all the other contenders.

A Sketchmag to me, would be something relatively cheap & therefore nudging towards B&W.
Before I read the comments I was going to say: B&W because otherwise, is is still a sketch, but seeing as you often do colour, that's off the board as an argument.
Personally, I'd be more inclined to buy a sketchmag if it were cheap.
I think you're right, and the crowd seems to agree too. I'm more then likely gonna go with a B&W book and try to make it as inexpensive as possible.
